RP sample: Sophie had been gone for a while. Dad had been offered a job elsewhere, and her and mom had reluctantly agreed--it had been a good opportunity--and soon they'd found themselves hastily packing and moving into a small, two-bedroom apartment. It hadn't been too easy to adjust; the level of lifestyle there had been a lot different than from what she was used to. But still, Dad had been happy, and his job had been going well.
Luckily, they hadn't had to stay for long. Soon enough, they'd packed up again and headed back home. Sophie had been ashamed to admit that she wouldn't even mind hearing Sharpay's whiny, annoying voice in the halls now, once she was back at school.
The moment they'd arrived home, she could tell that something had been wrong, though. Mom and Dad had found out quickly, she knew, and their guarded expression and quiet voices--their obvious evasiveness--had made it obvious that they didn't want her to know anything. But Sophie had been persistent, she'd always been stubborn and she wasn't about to give up.
After a bit, Sophie's mom had given in with a certain amount of reluctance, but thoroughly annoyed with her daughter's attitude it towards it all, and had admitted that there somehow had been killed at the high school--during prom, actually. Her first reaction had been to laugh out loud, wondering what kind of joke they were trying to play on her--but as her eyes met her mother's, and she saw the dulled pain and sadness that shone in her eyes, she'd quickly sobered, realizing just how serious it all was.
Sophie'd come back, hoping to escape an unfamiliar world she'd been thrusted into, only to come back and find the home she'd left behind more of a mystery than the one she'd resided in for a few months. Still, there was no way that she wasn't going to school. Education was important to her, and she was certain that there would be others there too. The school had reopened and Sophie had slung her backpack onto her back, took a deep breath and walked into the school.
She'd noticed the immediate change in it--the atmosphere was less lively and bubbly than it had been before, there was a certain ominous feeling to it. The halls were less crowded--she knew that it wasn't a matter of arriving early, as she'd checked her watch and she was barely at time. Was it possible that there were parents who were reluctant enough to let their kids go to school again? She knew it was a big deal--it was a horrible, tragic event--but was that one thing going to stop numerous kids from coming to school?
Brushing her blonde hair away from her face, Sophie looked at her timetable. Gym, first period. She grimaced, annoyed--it was one period she absolutely detested, as she didn't find much enjoyment in sports, and often didn't try as hard as she could from lack of interest. She didn't doubt that she wouldn't be bad if she actually made an effort, but it just wasn't one of the things she found a priority. Soon she found herself changing quickly into her gym clothes, shivering against the cold air that drifted into the locker rooms. Folding her arms across her chest, she frowned momentarily, a nagging feeling at the back of her mind. Remembering what she'd been wanting to do, she stood in front of a mirror and carefully braided her blonde hair into two braids, one on each side.
Satisfied with the look, she went and sat down on one of the benches, which did nothing to help the sudden shivering that had overcome her. Clenching her hands on the rim of the bench, not caring if it hurt her fingers or made them feel numb, she wondered if things would ever be the same.
Sighing, she couldn't help but think that one thing hadn't changed: she still hated gym more than anything.
